Churros: Easy to Make Snack

Churros are as simple as they are quick. Talk about an international culinary delight!

They can be sweet or salty, fried or baked, cooked in any liquid oil such as canola, vegetable, or sunflower. (I would like to suggest you use coconut oil.  This is the oil I use 90% of the time when I need a cooking oil. Go to this link for more information on coconut oil.) The other 10% is olive oil.

Churros History is Ancient

No one truly knows the origin of Churros as they have been around since forever! Well, to me 1184 BC is forever. First documented in Ancient Egypt when engravings in Ramses III tomb, show workers processing wheat, making dough, rolling it and then frying. (Pictures are worth thousands of words right?)

In the 1st century, Ancient Rome leaves us written evidence of a dough made of water and flour to make fritters. (Another name for churros.)

Around the 10th century, Marco Polo’s influence brought in Asian and Persian cooking techniques connecting churros to Spain.

Dating back to around 1100s BC, the Chinese have a youtiao, or fried breadstick, that is dipped in rice porridge for breakfast. Youtiao is another Chinese word for churro.

Come forward to the 13th century and we have written manuscripts and cookbooks from Andalusia.  These reference fritters from Arab and North Africa as well as Southern Spain, who was under the rule of Muslim North Africans at one time.

In 1513 BC, the Portuguese traders took home cooking techniques from Europe, including churros, fried dough for a sweet treat. The Spaniards from Portugal, created the star shape porras, which resembles youtiao, which is churros.

From which ever or all Country it comes, Churros made it to the New World.  Simple meal, snack, or dessert it is easy to make from ingredients found in most kitchens.  It only takes a few minutes from start to finish. And if you have our churro kit it is even better. The kit comes with all you need to make churros, especially the tools to form the churros.
